Local Vacation
It is 8:20 a.m. and I am at my desk at home, still in my pajamas with two cats on my lap. Outside, it is cold, stormy and gray and I am comforted by the fact that I do not have to leave until at least one in the afternoon today- and the trip is only to Park Slope. For the first time in a while, I am on a week-long vacation in Brooklyn. We leave for a too-quick trip to see family in LA on Friday and my summer courses start on the 28th, so I figured that this would be a good time to sleep in a little, recuperate from this never-ending cold, catch up on life and personal projects and, above all, relax a bit before the summer flies into action (Summer? It is 44 degrees outside right now!)
Alexis and I took our first longish bike ride of the season on Saturday to Ridgewood (Queens, not NJ) to explore. It was nice to get out of South Brooklyn. My favorite part of the trip was when we randomly dropped into an open house. While Alexis checked out the backyard, I chatted with the realtor who, when I said that we were from Brooklyn, said, "Oh, Williamsburg?"
"No," I replied, "South Brooklyn."
"Oh, you mean Greenpoint?"
"No, Red Hook. Further south."
"Bushwick?"
[This went on for a while in a circle]
"Oh, the other Brooklyns," she said. "There are so many different Brooklyns. Brooklyn is so big."
The funny thing is, I think the same thing about Queens all the time.
Anyway, I have four days off in Brooklyn. I'm staring out the window now, trying to figure out what I want to tackle first. I am doing some research on the small schools movement(s) in New York, which could keep me happily busy for a while, but there is also all of that Red Hook waterfront research that I began a few months ago for a paper that never happened...and then there is the fact that I will have to read The Portrait of a Lady for a class soon...
Or maybe the first order of business for this cold, rainy morning is to lay back, scratch some cat heads, and not do anything. Yes, I think that must be the first order of business.

Did you ride to the Ridgewood Reservoir and out by Cypress Hills Cemetery? One of my favorite places to ride in NYC.

No- but next time we will. We did kind of a fly by the seat of our pants trip, as we got a late start. We rode around Bushwick for a bit as well as some other areas and got kind of confused as to what neighborhood we were actually in. It didn't really matter, though we definitely need to go back more and explore when we have more time.
