Hooked

About 1/8 of our new apartment.

The last seven days were fraught with great sadness and frustration; we spent the majority of the week trying to keep one another afloat. There was one element of brightness, however, that made any struggle feel worth it...we have found our new apartment. Even better, it is right upstairs from Summer House.

Our new house will require about four solid weeks of manual labor, from cleaning to painting to perhaps finishing the floors. Regardless, the fourteen windows, three skylights, unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty and Verrazano Bridge, and very big, separate, Corie-wonderland-like kitchen make everything worthwhile.

So, the better part of this weekend was spent scrubbing walls. One would think that this task could have been the ultimate drag, however the process cleansed more than just painted sheetrockit helped dissolve much of the anxiety and sadness of the previous week, replacing them with the satisfaction and exhaustion of hard work. Together, we are fixing up our future home; golly, it feels so damn good.

nice. did you get any paint in your mouth? b/c i did when i painted one of my other apartments. (rollers and breathing through your mouth with a cold don't work well.)

We haven't painted yet-- that's next week. I am sure that we will wind up covered in paint, though...we're struggling to figure out how to paint the ceilings properly, as they are high and even with a ladder or scaffolding or an extension roller, I am sure that it will be interesting.

We did sear all of our tastebuds off by inhaling bleach fumes all weekend, though.

There is 7/8 of an apartment left unseen?? It looks amazing.

Pretty much, give or take. The actual kitchen is only a small piece-- the apartment is the full floor.

Keep showing pictures of that humongous kitchen and you're going to end up with these annoying Alex and Deb's as neighbors!

Congratulations, you two. It looks like a total dream.

There's a gorgeous kitchen that would make even a non-cook like myself want to pick up a cookbook.

Congratulations and please, post more photos!

The kitchen looks beautiful! I'm so excited for you. So did you try cleaning with bleach and water?

Seems big enough for 50 lbs of cats.

It's fantastic! Or at least, one-eigth of it is awesome... I am jealous that you actually have cabinets.

Sadly, I think we have more like 100lbs of cat combined...I was just referring to Olga with the 50lbs.

We'll post some more pictures after we paint :)

How exciting! Now you just have to sell the winter home....any takers?

Posted by: jtw at November 7, 2005 2:18 PM

wow, it looks amazing - are you buying the place or is it a rental. i'm jealous - we didn't see anything nearly that nice when we were looking.

Posted by: Dahl at November 7, 2005 4:13 PM

finding it was luck (upstairs neighbors moving out) and definitely a rental...though i wish there was an option to buy. hopefully, the fairway will open soon (the security guard says late november '05) and then we will be set.

jtw-- i wish we had takers on the winter house. we're considering subletting.

is it a neighborhood you were already considering?

Posted by: phc at November 7, 2005 7:25 PM

Wow that's a beautiful kitchen. What jobs are the cats working to help pay the rent?

Posted by: Divaah46 at November 7, 2005 7:31 PM

Wait, that's in NEW YORK CITY??? Wow.
