Designer Ken
I admit that I read (well, skim, mostly) the Styles Section of the Sunday New York Times. Usually I'm checking to see if anyone I know has gotten married, or just to laugh and then vomit at the obnoxiousness of the wedding listings. Or sometimes, it's just in search of shining little vapid jewels, like Designer Ken.
Says the NYT:
The thing that completes Fashion Insider Ken's look is not his shoes or his silvery glasses or his even complexion of Silkstone, a Mattel proprietary substance that, as Ms. Grampp pointed out, differs subtly from the ordinary vinyls used to produce more economically accessible Kens. The thing that completes Ken is not his smart attaché case, either, but the magical press pass he carries "to guarantee instant access to the hottest fashion shows."
It seems like you can get anyone as an action figure these days. I've seen everything from Jesus to Hitler, Ben Franklin to Freud (I LOVE the Freud action figure and must obtain it at some point).
And now there's Fashion Insider Ken. He's about $100 and looks like half the men I walk past on my infrequent trips to West Houston/SoHo. If I can't stand this affectedness in person, why would I want an 11 1/2" replica?
But you know what? Here's my main problem with Fashion Insider Ken...or maybe just Mattell. If you're going to create a doll that so blatantly epitomizes a good looking fashion twink, for god's sake, let him be out and proud. And publicize that it's OKAY to be out and proud.
It seems to me that Billy, Carlos and Tyson would be the more ideal male action figures-- they actually have sexual organs. And a cooler variety of clothing (from Wall Street to fireman, crossdresser to leather-- they had some mad cool ones during Pride a few years ago), to boot. Furthermore, they're actually out of the closet, which is more than I can say for Fashion Insider Ken.
Check 'em out at Billy World.
