Crackin'

Fact #1: I totally wanted to write about Lafayette Walk in Bay Ridge and all things court last week.

Fact #2: Unfortunately, it came to my attention around that time that my Macbook had a gigantic crack in it. A trip to the Genius Bar (god I hate that label for tech support) has left me computerless for the next week or so. Even though they are fixing it for free outside of warranty, I am still peeved at this design flaw. Basically, I can expect it to crack again in a year or so. Whatever.

Fact #3: I have been quite preoccupied by things lately and the semester is revving up- I am signed up for two classes, though I suspect I will only wind up following through with one. They are the Literature of Torture and the History of NYC Public Schools. More about the latter later, as I have been reading a lot about high school student movements of the 60's. Fascinating stuff.

Question #1: We are beginning to plan out a garden. It looks like we will have about a 5' x 12' patch for growing. In the spring and summer it should have fairly good and consistent sun. If you had this little patch, what would you grow?

Promise #1: I'll be back soon- but first, a work trip to Poughkeepsie and the return of my portable computing device.

i dont have much garden space but last year i planted lots of herbs and it was awesome.

I am not a gardener. That being said, I love the idea of a kitchen garden, containing things you can pick and immediately prepare in your kitchen. So, this year, we are planning, in our small plot, a variety of tomatoes, some pepper varieties, a few herbs and perhaps a small row of carrots. Nothing fancy, but things I know we'll use in our kitchen. Oh, and green onions.

tomatoes, because you can never have enough. kirby cukes, and basil. everything else is cake

Definitely tomatoes. And select smaller varieties (grape, cherry) in addition to some of the larger varieties. I find that the small ones bear more fruit and longer into the season. Definitely basil and rosemary. Other herbs. With small space, you can plant climbing green beans if you are willing to build a fence or structure for them to climb on. Cukes are wonderful but maybe I've chosen the wrong variety as mine took lots of room.

Tomatoes, sugar snap peas, lettuce.....These are all things you can pick daily for a great salad. Keep the herbs in pots...they take up space in which you could be planting veggies and do just fine in pots on the steps, on the concrete, etc.

I loved having cherry tomatoes last summer and I had enough to add plenty to a salad every days. I was amazed by how sweet and delicious this fruit was that was coming out of my very own yard. (Can you tell this was my first summer gardening?) I also successfully grew regular red tomatoes. I was a bit disappointed that they were no more amazing than the ones from the grocery store. And lots of herbs. Our neighbors grow beans. I tried eggplant, which is supposed to do fine in this area, but I started it too late.
