Music for the Road

My dear friend is leaving Brooklyn this Friday to start a new phase of her life in Seattle. She's driving cross country with a few stops in between as has requested some music for the ride. I would like to give her a couple of playlists and have chosen the following categories:

Best 80's Music Ever (Ex: Wham!)
90's Adolescence (Ex: Alternative, but also things like Ace of Base)
College Years (Ex: Smith College in the late 90's...)
Ridiculous Rap Lyrics (Er, Do Yo Chain Hang Low?)
Current Goodies, and
Music that Reminds Me of S

Obviously, I am the only one who can cover the last category but I would love some input on the others. There is only one requirement-- the music cannot be sad, involve breakups or talk about leaving in a melancholy/tear producing way. For some reason that pretty much rules out my entire iPod.

Submissions start now. If the songs are available on MySpace, do let me know.

For "current goodies" that are non-depressing:

Regina Spektor, Voxtrot, Sufjan Stevens (for the midwest), new-ish Belle & Sebastian, Gnarls Barkley, The Knife, Jose Gonzales (sentimental but so sweet)

90's adolescence/college (?): Nirvana, Soul Asylum (that runaway train song), Toad the Wet Sprocket, Smashing Pumpkins (tonight tonight), the entire Throwing Copper album by Live, old STP, Red Hot Chili Peppers (under the bridge), Our Lady Peace, Greenday (dookie!)

... hm...I'm having too much fun with this. :)

Ahhh...making mixes, something I could talk about for hours...OK, I'll start with some of the songs on my 80's mix that seem to get a good reaction whenever they come on:

Rock me Amadeus - Falco
The Reflex - Duran DUran
Voices Carry - Till Tuesday
I just died in your arms tonight - Cutting crew
Sister Christian - Night Ranger
No One is to Blame and Things Can only Get Better - Howard Jones
Toy Soliders - Martika
99 Luftballoons - (I forget her name - Nina, I think)
Time After Time - Cynid Lauper (which is really just the best song ever, but might be disqualified, b/c it could be about breakups)
Here I go Again on My Own - Whitesnake
Youth Gone Wild - Skid Row
Take My Breath Away (from Top Gun) - Berlin
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
We Built This City - Jefferson Starship
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns & Roses
She Drives me Crazy - Fine Young Canniballs.
Invisible Touch - Genesis
Walk Like an Egyptian - Bangles
Smooth Criminal - Michael Jackson
Rasberry Beret - Prince
Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
Warrior - Scandal
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
Sunday Bloody Sunday (live @ Red Rocks) - U2
It's the End ofthe World As We Know it - REM

I'll probably post later in the day with my early 90's mix.

i know she's going to the North-west, but in any case, Wall of Voodoo's "Call of the West" album should still get the job done!

I assume the Smith College mix should be heavy on the Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco.

Hmm...that's a little more late high school-- I'm thinking more Throwing Muses/Kristin Hersh, Kaia, and later Le Tigre, etc. There's a big hole in my memory during that time period...I need to go back and see if I can dig up some of those ancient CDs...

Have you heard Nouvelle Vague's version of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon"? It's on Myspace. I lurve it!

You must check out www.bradboard.com, and look at his 90s lists. He's listed all of his favorite songs from each year and I must say, they're quite good and extensive. I'll email you a list as well, since, well, I fricking love the 90s.

In the Kristin Hersh/Muses vein, you've got Belly, Breeders, Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield (in various incarnations) and onne hit wonders like Veruca Salt. And, almost any of the 4AD bands from that time should fit the bill, really.

Oh, hell. I just realized that I'm talking more early/mid-90s; sometimes I forget how long ago I was in college.

Lest we forget 'Hold On' by Wilson Phillips and 'Move This' by Technotronic...
