On the Ride Home

"Caught in Chaos" (I think this is the title), Cathy de Monchaux; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC

We took a trip to DC this weekend to visit Skutchie. Theres not much in Washington other than Skutchie, our Federal government, and free art, the first and last of which we basked in for the twenty-four plus hours that we were there.

After my last experience with cheap Chinatown buses, I decided to go with the Orthodox Jews instead, catching the Washington Deluxe on Friday afternoon. The route to DC was filled with fried foods and cell phones-- nothing new-- but going home was quite pleasant.

Upon boarding, the bus driver whipped out two DVDsThe Banger Sisters and The Wedding Crashers. People stop yapping into their phones when movies play, which is a truly beautiful thing. Furthermore, the driver began the trip stating the following:

The lavatories, people. When this bus was designed, the lavatories were made specifically for LIQUIDS. Get it? Just liquids.

We will definitely take the Washington Deluxe again.

I'm an ass for not writing down all of the artists' names when I photographed pieces at the Hirshhorn Museum. I think that this piece was called "Caught in Chaos" by Cathy de Monchaux.

I visited D.C. this weekend, too, although I splurged on the US Airways shuttle. $141 round trip. Cheaper and faster than Amtrak.

I took the Washington Deluxe last year to DC. We had to endure Kenny G for the first 2 hours of our trip there.

On the way back the driver let passengers without tickets on and left some with tickets stranded, as well as speeding and almost killing us.

Next time, I'm hiring a car or flying.

PD Berger sent me here:)
I haven't done the Deluxe..but I have done Vamoose..it must be kind of similar?
I know they always play the same terrible movies. I seem to always catch "The Perfect Score" or the Perfect Snore....

Washington Deluxe wasn't bad, but I can see how it might be rather inconsistant. I once took a Chinatown bus that got me from NYC to DC in about 3 and a quarter hours. Now THAT was a fast, rather frightening trip.

although a bit sterile, there is actually some nice residential architecture in d.c. around capitol hill and up the connecticut & 16th street corridors. also interesting is the gentrification taking place in the shaw and 'chinatown' areas. but if you're sticking to art galleries, the phillips collection is worth seeing, and its in a really nice late 19th-century house! other than that, i agree that there is nothing to do in d.c.

Living in the Midwest, where entertainment requires high imagination and low expectation, I can't believe you just said there is nothing to do in dc. Although I suppose "big city" is always relative...
