Wife Swap, brought to you by Jet Blue

2005-01-15 jetblue2.jpg

On Friday, after only a few minutes after boarding our 8:00 a.m. flight, it became apparent that there was an unusually large cohort of couples with mismatched seats. As the cheery flight attendant played advanced Jet Blue Tetris, I remained rather oblivious, choosing instead to study the airlines newest television offeringsome sort of new age-y color therapy channel that was supposed to realign your chakra. My ears perked only when a minor ruckus began adjacent to our seats.

Two couples were mismatched. A young man was trying fervently to gain two seats where he and his wife could share the joys of our six-hour flight to Long Beach. He was not having much luck. Their misaligned partner, a middle-aged couple from Long Island represented by a rather tired, ambivalent husband, showed minimal signs of wanting to move. There were several bartering offers. Finally, as the exasperated young man exclaimed Im just trying to find a way for at least one of us to sit near our wives, Tired, Ambivalent Husband retorted

I do not want to sit next to my wife. We designed it this way.

It was hard to stifle our giggles as the Tetris game began once more, first shuffling the young couple together behind us and Tired, Ambivalent Husband with his wife in the opposite row, moving another man (who turned to Lex and muttered this is going to be TORTURE) to into the third outer seat of our row, then moving the tortured man behind us and the delicately designed couple who didnt want to sit next to one another up, divided by the aisle, with Tired, Ambivalent Husband next to us and his wife beside the young couple.

It was a fun flight. Perhaps the husband who would have been happier not beside his wife spent some time watching the Crystal Light and Chakra Channel. Is there a color that represents trapped?

oh, the couple were the humorous ones!

it actually wasn't a bad 6 hours. i think it was because i was so tired that i slept through most of it.

you know, there was this couple on my flight back that had the audacity to ask for someone to go from an isle seat to a middle seat. shockingly, the guy actually switched.

Why don't people just pick the right seats when they book their tickets?

is jet blue british? - there's a "u" in color
as for the couple - maybe they are all absence makes the heart grow fonder

Jet Blue only does domestic flights-- I think the "colour" was just for show. As for the couple...I don't think there was much fondness floating around there...
