THE HAIRCUT
Well, I finally broke down and got a real haircut last night.
For some reason, I've never been that high strung about my hair. I'm not particularly picky about who cuts it and generally try not to think about it. I think that part of my ambivalence has to do with cost...also that hair grows back and, when it comes to trimming an inch off of shoulder-length hair, it's pretty hard to screw up.
I'm not one for spas or aroma therapy, either. The concept of paying some one to touch you...well, it generally just seems weird to me. All that said, I don't think that I've ever treated myself to a nice haircutting experience. Lately I'd even been letting Cheesebus trim my hair (which might explain why one side was slightly longer than the other).
But this month, after the long haul of apartment closing and moving and mired with a mild bout of "I feel icky inside and out"...I needed a little something to make me feel good. My hair was out of control long and, short of blowing large amounts of money on shopping therapy at Century 21 (money that I do not have), a moderately priced haircut seemed like a good solution.
I went to the Aveda shop on 7th Ave last night on a whim. I must say, despite the small talk that I was required to engage in, it was a pretty nice experience. You're offered a cup of tea when you get there. They give you a head massage during shampooing and use various nice smelling products. At one point I started to fall asleep.
The actual haircut is nice, as well, though I'm not sure many people will notice the change (she did some sort of thining thing without using layers which helped greatly-- anyone with lots of thick hair would understand). The real benefit was how I felt when I left, which was slightly more relaxed with a cut that didn't make me want to wear my hair in a bun....which is the usual "I can't deal with this" style. Three cheers for Aveda.

I too have generally been unpicky with my hair, but the shorter it gets, the more people can screw it up, so my recent fav has been training cuts at Antonio Prieto salon in Chelsea - cheap but still more sylish than Supercuts.
Though I do get tired of the small talk as well.

Definitely. When I had short hair I was a lot more nervous, but generally went the SuperCuts route, as well..until one day when, after my haircut, the stylist said "Phew! I was so nervous because I had no idea what kind of haircut you were talking about! I just made it up as I went along!"

I'm all about the neigborhood barbershops/salons. I used to go to this Greek place (called: The Place) in the Ditmars section of Astoria. The $10 price tag being the major draw. With that cheap cut also came the ramblings of Greek women and all their racial biases (eg, Those Muslims on Steinway St. deserved to get their stores vandalized).
Now I go to a Russian guy on the next block on Steinway St. A haircut price is the same, and I get a shave with a straight razor to boot. What I am gonna do when I move to Prospect Heights?

Aw, now I feel gypped. If you're talking about the salon at 7th Ave. near 9th St...Not only did I get no tea, but the guy flatly refused to give me the haircut I wanted....being a total artiste, he gave me something I hated and was absolutely stricken at the suggestion that I actually wanted MORE cut off. ("That would ruin the shape!") Maybe I hit it on a bad night.

Apparently, says my friend, the tea and scalp massage are new. The woman who cut my hair wasn't too bad. I was a bit wary at first, as she made all sorts of recommendations and I know nothing about hair...but I just rolled with it and it worked out ok. I was kind of afraid I'd walk out looking like Dorothy Hammill in the early 80's.

Must be nice to have all that hair to sculpt. Alas, there's little to be done with my increasingly prominent frontal hair island. A scalp rub? Maybe

the aveda on 6th/spring will cut your hair for $15.. i think it's students though. Some of my friends go there.
When I moved to San Diego years ago I didn't know where to get my hair cut so I just went to Super Cuts that was by my office. I thought there was no way they could mess it up.. and A-line bob.. that's easy, right? Wrong. I walked out with one side NOTICEABLY shorter than the other.. not on purpose! Never went to Super Cuts (Supa-Sluts, as I like to call them now) again.
