Yoga for Peace

I've been putting off thinking about next week's two-year anniversary too much. Not that it hasn't crossed my mind quite often. Days like today actually bring it more close to the surface. It's sad that I will always associate crystal clear blue skies with September 11th.

Here's an interesting event called Yoga for Peace. Oddly (as I generally don't lean toward the zen of things), my interest is piqued. Info:

A Life Celebration
Yoga for Peace is an idea awakened by the events of September 11, 2001 and strengthened by the world's both violent and peaceful responses to this human tragedy. Yoga for Peace is the symbol of the paradigmatic shift in consciousness of the world. yfp.gif

This year on September 13, two thousand New Yorkers will celebrate life in a unique addition to New York's world-inspired events, moving beyond our mourning of the last two years.

Participants will move to powerful drum beats while completing an invigorating practice of 108 sun salutations, or mala in Sanskrit.

Upon completion of the mala, participants will rest in svasana, a lying meditation, to form a human mandala, or peace wheel.

Prominent figures in the yoga and New York communities will lead the kirtan, chanting, that signals the commencement and closure of the celebration.

As a gesture of support for shared goals, proceeds and spirit from Yoga for Peace will benefit an organization dedicated to spreading peace and demonstrating compassion.

I'm a little nervous about the 4 hours worth of 108 sun salutations, however I think it might be an interesting event. As a person who has a bad habit of taking sadness and pain out on herself, 100+ sun salutations seems like a healthy form of, er...masochism (for some one like me, who's aching from last night's hour of yoga). We'll see.
